Take a Chance…

No matter how you cut it, stepping out of your comfort zone is…petrifying at best. Yet, the rewards of doing so far outweigh the anxiety that comes along with the process. In fact, highly acclaimed TED speaker, Jia Jiang, put himself through a therapy approach that revolves around stepping out of our comfort zones and getting rejected! Jiang took a chance every day for 100 days, actually seeking to be rejected. You can see what he found in his TED Talk, but the point here is that sometimes taking a leap of faith is entirely warranted. If you’ve been looking for a sign, here it is (Wow, this is starting to sound like a horoscope…)!

What better time than today, National Take a Chance Day?! Don’t ask me the origins of this peculiar holiday, I wouldn’t be able to tell you (and neither would surfing the internet for an entire night, trust me). Although this holiday seems to be one of those internet bred, millennial created phenomena, it’s still incredibly valuable. Why are we so scared to take chances in the first place? Why should there be an entire day devoted to urging people to just go for it? Taking a chance inherently means you’re out of control. Let that sink in a for minute. Most of us thrive on having at least a loose grip on the outcome of a situation, so when we’re rolling the dice, it’s understandable that we might sweat a little. But as Jia Jiang has showed us, the best way to deal with this fear is to just keep taking chances.

So what do I mean when I say take a chance? Buy 10 lotto tickets?! No (but if you do and you win, I’ll happily share the prize 😉). Taking a chance can start with something incredibly small, you don’t have to go crazy! To spark some ideas, here are a few ways you can take a chance:

1. Try a new food
It’s so easy to just stick to your favorites, we often forget to be a little adventurous with our dietary decisions. Try a food that you’ve never had before or check out a new restaurant today!

2. Reach out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while
Reaching out to someone you’ve lost touch with is a terrifying endeavor. You have no idea how they’ve changed, how they’ll react, or what will come of your effort. But at the end of the day, you’ll never know if you don’t take a chance!

3. Cold call or email

Reaching out to someone who you’ve never met and who doesn’t even know you can be an even scarier endeavor! Whether you’re interested in job prospects, or just really admire someone’s work, it’s a bold yet rewarding move to just cold call or email them!

4. Book the trip
You’ve been thinking about going on this trip for months, spending countless hours making Pinterest boards and stalking plane prices. Today, just go for it! Plane tickets are cheapest on Tuesdays anyway 😉.

5. Buy the dress
(Or shirt, or jacket, or bottom….). I get it, ordering clothes online can be risky! But that dress you’ve been eyeing for a while? It’s waiting for you to take a chance and place your order! The worst that can happen, when your order Anjé at least, is that you end up looking gorgeous 🤷.
